My name is Richard Wylie and I am the new CEO at Glaucoma Australia. To mark World Glaucoma Week, mivision has created this fabulous feature edition dedicated to the latest thinking on glaucoma.
I truly believe Australia and New Zealand are centres of excellence for glaucoma research, clinical innovation, and patient care. As you will read in this issue, our thinking around the identification, and management of glaucoma, and how to secure the best long-term outcomes for our patients, continues to evolve.
What really excites me about Glaucoma Australia is the tangible dif ference we make to people’s lives every day and the potential to help many more people in the years ahead. Glaucoma – or the sneak thief of sight – remains one of the leading causes of preventable blindness both here and around the world. We still have much work to do.
For me, the jewel in the crown at Glaucoma Australia is our patient support program. Every day, our trained Clinical Educators support patients throughout their glaucoma treatment journey. Our program data, when compared to published adherence data for typical glaucoma patients, demonstrates significantly improved health outcomes for those enrolled in our program. For this reason, growing the number of patient s who are enrolled in our program is an ongoing focus for me.
As someone who has been a Fundraising Director for a major medical research institute, one of the things I admire most about Glaucoma Australia is the organisation’s ongoing commitment to supporting local research. Our Quinlivan Research Grant, which is awarded annually to one of Australia’s leading glaucoma researchers, is a great example of this. With this in mind, another goal of mine is to grow our revenue streams, so we can continue to invest in high quality research into the future.
I hope you enjoy this collection of glaucoma ar ticles. Thank you to the authors for your time and insights and thank you to mivision for your ongoing commitment to improving the eye health of those living in Australia and New Zealand.
I wish you all a very happy World Glaucoma Week in 2023.
