Closing the Loop on Sustainable Production
Circular Eyewear, founded by Chris Savage and based in Sydney’s inner west, is redefining sustainability within the optical industry. Launched in late 2024, the business comprises eyewear creation (Objekt Eyewear) and eyewear recycling (Spexcycle).
Objekt Eyewear is a premium sunglasses collection that marries sustainability with craftsmanship. This innovative range was made possible through strategic collaborations with industry leaders. Notably, Young Henrys Brewery contributed over 1,500 aluminium beer cans, which were reimagined into distinctive temple arms for the Objekt frames.
Meanwhile, Rodenstock Australia provided premium sunglass lenses for the limited-edition release, ensuring exceptional optical quality. The Objekt Eyewear collection will be expanded with six styles of ophthalmic frames in March 2025.
Spexcycle – Australia’s first closed-loop eyewear recycling initiative – transforms discarded frames into high-quality, traceable new products, tailored specifically for the needs of optical professionals and their customers. This initiative enables practices to collect used frames, which are then processed to reclaim raw materials for the production of new sustainable and elegant eyewear pieces.
A location finder guides eco-conscious consumers to participating stores, allowing optometry practices to showcase their commitment to sustainability “We’re redefining what’s possible in the optical industry,” Mr Savage explained. “Spexcycle and Objekt Eyewear represent a critical step towards building a circular economy within our field, setting new benchmarks for innovation and responsible manufacturing.”
Acknowledging the “integral” involvement of industry partners, Mr Savage said “their support not only elevates our products but showcases the power of collaboration in driving meaningful change in the optical industry”.
