Welcome to the first printed issue of mivision for 2026. This year we will celebrate 20 years of being mivision – it’s an enormous milestone and one that causes us to reflect on how much our publication has changed and the industry has progressed in those 20 years – and how the future is shaping up.
It seems timely then that this issue has a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI). Ophthalmologist Dr Rushmia Karim, academics Dr Jack Phu and Henrietta Wang, and optometrist Andrew Christiansen have all provided their perspectives on how AI is influencing eye health – from consultations to collaborative care and the provision of eye health in under-served communities. As with all things AI, we see that there are a wealth of benefits coming our way, however there are also some practical and ethical issues to be considered.
Here at mivision, we’ve embraced technology to expand our reach. Initially limited to print, we’re now sending regular e-newsletters to keep you informed, and every monthly issue of mivision is published in digital format with separate versions for Ahpra-registered health professionals and other industry members, meeting the stringent requirements of the Medical Board of Australia.
Videos and live webinars have become popular and effective methods of education, enabling optometrists and ophthalmologists to share, learn and discuss complex clinical advancements from the comfort of their homes. An extraordinary 50,000 courses, hosted on our CPD platform (mieducation.com), were completed in 2025 alone!
We are now read by eye health professionals in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, and as far afield as Tanzania. mivision’s mission has always been to “improve communication within the eye care community, in the interests of achieving optimum patient outcomes”. Technology is now enabling us to do this on a global scale and, importantly, in countries where access to clinical education is limited.
Enjoy this issue, which is packed with fascinating research news, new CPD, and business articles, as well as some refreshing eyewear fashion.
