Daring, Different

It’s All About the Struktur

Struktur is a French eyewear brand, based in Normandy and renowned for its distinctively colourful and geometrical frames. Under the ownership of Thierry Bonhomme and Jean-François Lufeaux since 2018, the brand is enjoying increasing global success.
mivision caught up with Mr Bonhomme – manager and lead designer – to find out more about his bold approach to crafting innovative eyewear from acetate, metal, and titanium.

Q. Can you tell me about your background as an eyewear designer?

I have a rich background in eyewear design, marked by a passion for crafting unique and stylish frames. Ten years ago, I acquired the Solf Production factory (a French frame manufacturing facility since 1966). There I increased my knowledge in design, complemented by hands-on experience working with various materials and styles in the eyewear industry. This combination has equipped me with a keen eye for detail and an understanding of the evolving trends in the world of eyewear.

Q. What excites you the most about eyewear design?

It’s the opportunity to blend functionality with artistry. Eyewear is not just a visual aid; it’s a statement piece. The prospect of creating something that enhances both the aesthetic and practical aspects of an individual’s style is truly thrilling.

Q. How do you approach a new collection?

For each new collection, I embark on a creative journey fuelled by diverse inspirations. It could be anything from nature and architecture to cultural nuances. I often draw inspiration from the unexpected, seeking to weave those elements into frames that tell a unique story while resonating with our audience.

Q. How do you find a balance between aesthetics and technology?

Balancing aesthetics and technology is at the core of our design philosophy. We leverage cutting-edge materials and manufacturing processes without compromising on the visual appeal of our eyewear. It’s about seamlessly integrating technological advancements to enhance comfort, durability, and performance while maintaining a distinct and alluring aesthetic.

Q. Can you describe a ‘typical’ Struktur wearer?

A Struktur wearer is someone who appreciates the fusion of innovation and style. They are individuals with a discerning taste for unique, bold designs that reflect their personality. Struktur eyewear is not just an accessory; it’s a statement of individuality, worn by those who embrace innovation and have a keen eye for fashion.

Q. What key characteristics do you carry from collection to collection?

Consistency in quality, innovation, and a commitment to pushing boundaries defines Struktur. Each collection reflects our dedication to delivering eyewear that seamlessly blends avant-garde design with practicality. Our frames consistently embody a balance between contemporary aesthetics and timeless appeal.

Q. What about your approach to colour?

Choosing colours is a meticulous process. We aim to offer a diverse palette that resonates with a spectrum of tastes. Colours are selected based on current trends, cultural influences, and the emotional responses they evoke. Each frame is not just an accessory; it’s a canvas for self-expression, and our colours play a pivotal role in that narrative.

Q. Tell me about your current collection.

The most exciting design element of our current collection lies in the seamless integration of unconventional shapes with intricate detailing. We’ve pushed the boundaries of traditional eyewear design, introducing elements that not only catch the eye but also provide a unique and comfortable wearing experience.

Q. When you think about ‘French eyewear manufacturing’, what do you believe makes it stand out ahead of the rest?

French eyewear manufacturing is synonymous with craftsmanship and precision. The attention to detail, use of premium materials, and a rich legacy of artisanship set French eyewear apart. The commitment to quality is unwavering, and this heritage is reflected in every pair of Struktur frames.

Q. Can you tell me more about your manufacturing process?

Our manufacturing process is a testament to our commitment to quality. We source materials meticulously, ensuring they meet our standards of durability and sustainability. Production involves a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, resulting in eyewear that not only meets but exceeds industry standards.

Q. What do you say to people who are shy about trying on a frame that is a little different from the rest?

I would encourage them to embrace the opportunity for self-expression. Eyewear is a personal statement, and a frame that stands out is a chance to showcase individuality. Trying something different can be a transformative experience, allowing one to discover new facets of their style and confidence.

Q. If you could change the world of eyewear design, what would you do?

I would strive for inclusivity and sustainability in eyewear design. Making stylish, high-quality frames accessible to a broader audience while minimising the environmental impact would be a transformative goal. Eyewear should not only enhance personal style but also contribute positively to the world we live in.
