The Language of Design

English fashion designer, singer, and television personality, Victoria Beckham, is a household name across multiple generations, for many reasons.
Beginning her career as a singer with the pop group The Spice Girls in the 1990s, she began exploring fashion design in the early 2000s and launched her eponymous fashion label in 2008.
Today that label comprises high-end women’s ready-to-wear fashion, beauty products, a range of perfumes, and accessories, including statement sun and optical eyewear.
Recognising her contribution to fashion and the “unique language” of her design, in 2017 Victoria Beckham was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and early this year she was appointed Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture.
This year Victoria Beckham commenced a 10-year licensing agreement with the Italian giant of eyewear, Safilo.
mivision sat down with Matthew Bradshaw, Marketing Manager at Safilo Australia, to learn more about Victoria Beckham’s eyewear collection.

Q. Why did Safilo choose to collaborate with Victoria Beckham to develop an eyewear collection?

The mission for Victoria Beckham Eyewear is to establish a global fashion reference in the women’s segment, with an offering of uniquely designed eyewear pieces that stand out for their quality and attention to detail. The brand aims to create eyewear that is an aspirational yet accessible proposition, powered by the influence and legacy of Victoria Beckham, who has successfully built and affirmed her brand within the fashion industry.

Q. What gap does it fill in Safilo's overall range?

It has perfectly responded to a potential gap within the Safilo portfolio, catering to an important segment of the feminine premium luxury eyewear market. Moreover, it distinguishes itself through a perfectly balanced collection that speaks to a broad audience – from the refined minimalist to the confident, fashion-forward woman.

Q. Who is the target audience for Victoria Beckham eyewear?

The Victoria Beckham audience includes those women who demand high quality materials and aspirational yet accessible offerings, all with unparalleled attention to detail. It appeals to different types of consumers as it includes both versatile, everyday styles for women who prefer a more casual, effortless look as well as bold, high-fashion designs that reflect a glamorous and sophisticated aesthetic for a fashion-conscious woman.

Q. How has Victoria influenced the design approach?

As the Creative Director and Founder of the Victoria Beckham Fashion House, Victoria has a hands-on role within our design and production functions.

The eyewear reflects her broader fashion universe, drawing inspiration from classic yet modern silhouettes showcased across her runway collections; we see the timeless elegance and a clean, minimalist aesthetic that defines her brand identity.

By aligning eyewear design with the same design codes present in her ready-to-wear clothing and accessories, the result is a cohesive product that feels authentically ‘Victoria Beckham’: sophisticated, modern, and effortlessly chic.

Q. What role does Victoria have in the day-to-day design process?

Victoria Beckham and her Fashion House are key players in the design process. She and her Fashion House work closely with Safilo’s design team from the earliest stages of concept development, sharing creative direction, references, materials research, and brand vision.

Rather than stepping in only for seasonal approvals, the collaboration is an ongoing dialogue. Victoria contributes to defining the aesthetic codes, proportions, colour palettes, and detailing, ensuring that each eyewear piece is fully aligned with the brand’s DNA and ready-to-wear collections.

Q. Are there any particular aspects of the manufacturing process/materials/hinges etc. that distinguish the collection?

The key characteristics of Victoria Beckham eyewear lie in a series of distinctive design elements and refined material choices. The collection features the signature Vcut logo on the front endpieces, along with dedicated custom details on the temple cores and hinges, which reinforce the craftsmanship and exclusivity of the product. Iconic monogram touches – applied on the lenses and temple tips – further enhance brand recognition and elevate the overall aesthetic.

In addition, highquality materials play a fundamental role: from premium Havana acetates to bespoke marble-inspired finishes and horneffect textures, the components convey sophistication, durability, and a timeless sense of luxury. Together, these characteristics create eyewear that is both immediately recognisable and true to the refined, modern elegance of the Victoria Beckham brand.

Q. How does Safilo plan to evolve Victoria Beckham eyewear?

As per the vast majority of the Safilo Eyewear Brands, Victoria Beckham Eyewear will release two collections every year – a spring/summer collection and a fall/winter collection.

Through this seasonality, the brand will evolve by continuing to cite its foundational principles while overlaying colours, designs, and materials inspired by the different seasons and technology advancements.
